GUINEA’S MAMADY DOUMBOUYA BACK MALI TO KICK AGAINST ECOWAS SANCTIONS
Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has backed his Malian counterpart, Assimi Goita against the heavy sanctions slapped on Mali by the Economic Community of West African States. ECOWAS directed member states to close both land and air borders with Mali. However, Guinea says it has nothing to do with the decision.
“The National Committee of Reconciliation and Development (CNRD) wishes to inform the public opinion and international opinion that the Republic of Guinea was in no way associated with the decision of the 4th extraordinary summit of ECOWAS Heads of State,” Aminata Diallo, Military spokeswoman said on state television, adding that:
“Consequently, the committee reaffirms that the air, land and sea borders of the Republic of Guinea remain open to all sister nations in accordance with its pan-Africanist vision,” She added. This was in line with ECOWAS’ new sanctions announced on Sunday after extra-ordinary meeting in Accra Ghana warning member states against Mali.
Mali’s leadership has also announced a retaliatory measure against ECOWAS member states after the sanctions were announced. Spokesman, Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga said “the government of Mali strongly condemns these illegal and illegitimate sanctions”, adding that:
“The government of Mali regrets that West African sub-regional organizations are being manipulated by extra-regional powers with ulterior motives … On the basis of reciprocity, Mali has decided to recall its ambassadors and close its land and air borders with the states concern"
