Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s statue at Kulungugu to be renovated
The 60-year-old statue of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah at the border town of Kulungugu in the Pusiga District of the Upper East Region is to be renovated soon.
On 1 August 1962, Kwame Nkrumah stopped in Kulungugu, a minor port of entry in the Pusiga District in the Upper East where there was an assassination attempt. There was a near miss from the bomb explosion.
Dr. Nkrumah was coming from a meeting with President Maurice Yaméogo in Tenkodogo, Burkina Faso, at the time known as Upper Volta. The meeting was to sign documents relating to the construction of the major hydroelectric project on the Volta which would become Lake Volta
A statue was constructed in his honour but after years went by the statue has been deteriorated.
As a result, a seven-member committee organized in the community with funding support from a group calling itself Nkrumah Never Dies Party (NNDP) has been commissioned to renovate the statue.
NNDP is a new political pressure group that follows the ideologies and dreams of Nkrumah. Its formation also seeks to honour the late President of Ghana Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah for the immense contributions he made toward the unification of Africa.
Speaking to the media after the commencement of the renovation of the status, a young Pan-Africanist and founder of NNDP, Mr Amusu Kwaggye, indicated that failure by successive governments to improve or renovate the 60-year-old bombing statue in the area was a big blow and indications that the country needs serious retrospection.
He said, “my coming today here is not mere achievement and I know the spirit still lives on. It was through the calls and public outcry that the statue of our father was in a deplorable state and as a son and a Pan-Africanist who followed the ideologies of Nkrumah through which a Party is formed to honour his name; it was proper to work on it.”
“We have come a long way and I believe we all know the history. As we commissioned work to begin today, I pray it comes out the best. No one can rewrite the history, Nkrumah lives forever.”
Touching on the Party, NNDP, Mr Kwaggye explained that it was to honour Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah for the immense contributions he made towards the unification of Africa as well as reawaken the spirit of Ghanaian youth of what they lost.
“I know a lot of Ghanaians have lost hope due to the kind of political parties we have today. So, this is a new phenomenon that is building up and the people of Kulungugu know about it. So, we are coming through the spirit of Nkrumah. NNDP is coming and we need your support to revitalize the spirit of Ghana. We are losing our identity and purpose as a democratic society. So, NNDP is here to reawaken that spirit Nkrumah established.”
Mr Kwaggye however called on Ghanaian youth to keep the spirit of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah on as hope and restoration were born to happen.
