The Busia Mausoleum and Arch (Tourism In Bono Regions)
Actually there are two monuments in the Bono region, one at Wenchi and Sunyani in memory of the late Prof. Kofi Abrefa Busia, Ghana's Prime Minister of the 2nd Republic. Among the notable footprints of the late Prime Minister is the development of rural areas. He was the first Ghanaian leader to introduce a ministry in charge of rural development, which carried out a massive programme to open up the country's rural areas through the provision of roads, health posts and pipe borne water among other amenities.
Academically, Busia became Ghana's first University Professor. He also helped to deepen Ghana and Africa's position on the academic map of the world through teaching and professorships in many universities across the world.
Prof. Busia was born at Wenchi on 11th July, 1913 and died in Oxford, England, on 28th August 1978. He graduated from the University College, Oxford in 1941.
It is in the recognition of Prof. Busia's remarkable achievements that an arch and a mausoleum have been built in his home region. The Busia Mausoleum is located on a hill off the Wenchi–Nsawkaw road about 400m from the centre of the Wenchi town. The facility has a library stocked with many of the classic books and other materials authored by the late Prime Minister who was a royal of Wenchi. On display at the mausoleum are the artefacts and personal items used by Prof. Busia.
The K. A. Busia Arch is a 12–feet statue of the late Prime Minister located on the Jubilee Park in Sunyani. The statue stands beneath a 4–post arch that represents the key attributes of Busia, namely a scholar, a politician, a royal and a statesman.
Among the many philosophical statements for which Prof. Busia is fondly remembered is this: "It is by the devoted day–to–day service of many ordinary and unnoticed citizens that a nation achieves greatness..."
Prof. Busia made the statement on the floor of Parliament on the 6th day of March 1957 when he seconded a motion in reply to the message of HM Queen Elizabeth ll of Great Britain.
